5 Star Yahoo! Rating for 12 years in a row!
Cinnamon is one of the world's most common and popular spices but until recent surprising research few people considered it a medicinal herb. However, delving into the history of the herb reveals that its use as a medicine ranges from ancient Egypt through the Bubonic Plague. Even the modern research was prompted by reports of people controlling diabetes, cutting cholesterol levels in half, and wiping out belly fat. Further research indicates the herb improves brain function and is a sexual stimulant. What's not to like? Much like ginger root and turmeric, we seem to have another common herb that would deserve wonder drug status if it were made by a drug company. The popularity of cinnamon as a health supplement is soaring as the research pours in supporting the claims. See the research below.
Cinnamon: The Research, Health Benefits and Greenbush Quality.

Benefits of Cinnamon*: Antibacterial, acne, athletes foot, brain function, anti-fungal, blood sugar balance, cholesterol reduction (reducing LDL while not affecting HDL), diabetes care and prevention: increased glucose metabolism and insulin production, intestinal gas reduction, digestive health, sexual stimulation, stroke prevention, lower triglyceride levels, ulcer treatment, urinary tract infections, yeast infections.                                                                                                                          *From "The People's Pharmacy" by Joe and Teresa Graedon PhD, "Healing Therapies" by Mark Stengler, N.D., The Duke's Dozen by Dr. James Duke, and suggestions of Dr. Andrew Weil.

Cinnamon Research and Medical Uses:

New Research!:

-Brain Function: Recent studies showed cinnamon improved memory and the ability to process information. Further studies are underway to confirm the use of the herb in improving mental function in Alzheimer's patients and the elderly as well as for anxiety.

-Belly Fat: Abdominal fat has long been associated with prediabetes since the digestive system tends to store excess glucose as fat there. Cinnamon reduces insulin resistance allowing the system to process the excess glucose and reduce belly fat possibly reducing the chances of developing Type II diabetes.

-Blood Sugar and Diabetes Control: Researchers in a Maryland USDA center accidentally discovered that cinnamon, administered in apple pie of all things, reduced blood glucose levels and insulin resistance as well as reducing cholesterol levels. Further studies confirmed the findings and much interest has developed in finding if cinnamon can help to prevent the onset of diabetes.

-Cholesterol: A 2003 study published in the Journal of Food Medicine showed the cinnamon improved overall cholesterol levels by lowering bad LDL cholesterol while raising good HDL levels. The same study confirmed lower blood sugar and triglyceride levels as well.

-Urinary Tract and Yeast Infections: German studies indicate that cinnamon completely eliminates the bacteria that cause urinary tract infections as well as the fungus that causes yeast infections.

-Ulcer Prevention and Digestive Problems: A Japanese study indicates that cinnamon soothes the digestive tract and helps to prevent ulcers.

Avoid Complicated Formulas.  “These are the "kitchen sink" supplements, products that have as many as 20 herbs in a tablet or capsule. It''''s hard enough to get an active does of one herb into a single tablet or capsule, much less 20 active doses of 20 different herbs. Bottom line: They just don''''t work.

Ginger Root reseach and Medical Uses:

New Research!: Ginger root was recently the subject of a startling new research report presented at The American Association for Cancer research conference in Phoenix. In the study, ginger actually suppressed cancer cells suggesting that the herb was able to fuel apoptosis or the death of the cancer cells. Ginger has been shown to work against skin, ovarian, colon and breast cancer. But it had not been shown to halt the progression of cancer until now.

Ginger is one of the most interesting and useful herbal health tonics, and one of the easiest to use. It is a great flavoring for many foods including ginger ale and ginger snaps, and is used throughout the world. Scientists have isolated several compounds in Ginger that have specific effects against the most common family of cold viruses. It is anti-inflammatory, improving arthritis, and it is commonly used in Asia to prevent migrains and vertigo.

Ginger is a general health tonic that improves circulation, aids with digestive problems and has anti-inflammatory properties possibly more powerful than over the counter pain relievers without the side effects. It is helpful in the treatment of anything from angina and fatigue, to depression and tendinitus.

Ginger Root: As Seen On TV....

We were watching the Discovery Channel the other day when an interesting show called "The Myth Busters" came on. And they were doing a piece on seasickness remedies, including wrist straps, magnets, pressure points, pharmaceutical drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and ginger root.

The guys on the show rigged up a seasickness chair that rotated and bounced, causing motion sickness, not our idea of a good time, but they are well paid for their shenaigans. We watched as they applied various motion sickness devices and spun around until they got sick. We watched with particular interest as they tested the ginger root. They spun and spun and finally stopped, feeling fine. In fact, at the end of the show, the team concluded that ginger was the only viable choice. The drugs and worked as well, but left them feeling, well, drugged. The ginger had not side effects.

We have known about the ginger cure for motion sickness for a long time. We have used it ourselves many times. But it was still nice to see it validated on a national television show.

Red Clover and Soy Isoflavones: The Research, Health Benefits and Greenbush Quality.

Red Clover Soy Isoflavone Benefits and Uses: Fighting Cancer, Preventing Cancer, Lowering Cholesterol, Preventing Heart Disease, Dandruff, Endometriosis, PMS and Menopausal Symptoms, Hot Flashes, Osteoporosis, Shingles and Warts.

Dr. James Duke, author of the book "The Green Pharmacy" and former herbal researcher with the USDA had this to say about soy; "Soybeans, like most, if not all, commonly eaten beans, contain several compounds called phytoestrogens. These compounds mimic the effect of the body's own estrogen, but with a milder punch than the real hormone. Since many breast tumors seem to need the hormone estrogen to grow, some speculate that phytoestrogens might inhibit tumor growth" Dr. Duke also comments, "Soybeans also are touted to alleviate the symptoms of menopause, when a woman's natural production of estrogen slows down, and, "one cup of soybeans contains about the same amount of phytoestrogens as one tablet of Premarin, the much stronger synthetic estrogen that is often prescribed in hormone replacement therapy." These phyto-estrogens are among those that contribute to the breast enhancing effects. Soy Isoflavones are a wonderful addition for breast enhancment and general breast health.

Isoflavone Research:

The most well studied phytoestrogens are the isoflavones found in soy and red clover.

Heart Disease, Cholesterol and Cancer: Intake of soy protein has been found to help reduce total cholesterol and LDL while increasing HDL ("good" cholesterol). In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows products that contain at least 6.25 grams of soy protein per serving and are low in fats and cholesterol to declare that they can help reduce the risk of heart disease.

Breast Health: Soy isoflavones, which happen to be antioxidants, may also help prevent breast and prostate cancer. Isoflavones have an anti-estrogen effect when the body's estrogen levels are high because isoflavones and estrogen compete for estrogen receptors. This may help explain the lower incidence of breast cancer in populations with higher intakes of soy foods and a possible beneficial effect of isoflavones in treating cyclical mastalgia (breast pain associated with the menstrual cycle).

PMS and Menopausal Symptoms: Soy specifically has been shown to significantly reduce menopausal symptoms such as "hot flashes". Both red clover and soy isoflavones may improve the elasticity of blood vessels in menopausal and peri-menopausal women.
Melanoma Watch
As the sunny season approaches it is important for anyone with melanoma risk factors to take extra precautions.  Risk factors include a family history of skin cancer, fair skin that burns easily, or more than twenty moles on your skin.  In addition to using the green tea extract as a preventive measure you should take the following steps:
1. Monthly sefl examination.  Keep an eye out for any moles that are asymmetric,  have an irregular border, have variations in color, or have a diameter greater than the size of a pencil eraser.   Also, any moles that change in appearance or become itchy or tender should be checked out.
2.   Yearly Exam.   See a dermatologist for a check up once per year if you are in the skin cancer high risk group.
Melanoma can be an aggressive cancer but it is easily curable if detected early.  Deaths from melanoma could be reduced 60% through early detection.
