Understanding Immune System Herbs

Unlike over-the-counter cold and flu medications which merely treat symptoms, herbs can help to strengthen your body's natural response to illnesses resulting in a quicker recovery and a natural resistance to new viruses. And research indicates that an improved immune response can help your body to prevent more serious diseases such as cancer.

There are basically two types of herbs for the immune system; those for a short term boost and those for long term building of the immune system.

Echinacea, and similar herbs, should be used for short periods of time, usually at the first sign of a cold or flu. It is most useful for a quick boost in immune system response and can be quite effective in stopping an illness. Echinacea should be of particular interest during cold and flu season when you exposed to the illnesses on a regular basis. It is the main ingredient in our new Sambusol Super Immune Tonic.

Astragalus, ginseng and reishi, on the other hand, can improve your health and stamina all year long. Astragalus is the number one immune boosting herb of Dr. Andrew Weil, a highly respected University of Arizona Medical school professor and natural medicine guru. These types of herbs build immune system strength over time helping your body to put up a wall of defense against intruding illnesses.

Several other helpful herbs:

Lemon Balm (Melissa), is a very strong anti-virul and is particularly helpful with herpes simplex viruses, (cold sores, measles, shingles and genital and oral herpes). Lemon balm is also a mild relaxant that can help with insomnia and can improve concentration and mental acuity. Good for a fast boost or long term use.

Elderberry The primary ingredient in the popular cold formula Sambucol, elderberry contains anthocyanins which enhance immune function by boosting the production of cytokines. These unique proteins act as messengers in the immune system to help regulate immune response, thus helping to defend the body against disease. Elderberry is useful against both viral and bacterial infections and can be used long term.

Ginger Root Ginger contains nearly a dozen antiviral compounds. Research has shown that several of these compounds, called sesquiterpenes, are particularly effective against the common cold viruses, rhinoviruses. The gingerols in this herb have been shown to prevent cancer. And these compounds are effective against cold symptoms as well, reducing pain, fever and coughing. A cup of ginger tea should be your natural cold medicine.

Garlic Sometimes called "nature's penicillin" because of its powerful antibiotic effects, garlic can stop a virus or bacteria from entering your system. Garlic can also lower blood pressure, increase cardiovascular health and prevent microbial infections, yeast, fungi and worms. It is better used long term to build immunity and prevent infections.
